SMS for Life: combatting malaria in Tanzania
Posted on 2 October 2009
Roll Back Malaria is using text messaging, mobile phones and electronic mapping to identify stocks of Artemisinin Combination Therapy (ACTs) medicines and Quninine injectables in Tanzania, in a bid to improve access to these essential medicines, eliminate stock-outs and ulitmately reduce the number of deaths from Malaria.
Marlaria accounts for more than one million deaths a year, with 90 per cent of those among pregnant women and children under five. Tanzania has the third largest population at risk of Malaria.
This project is using similar technolgies to the Stop the Stock-outs campaign (http://www.medicinestransparency.org/news-events/article/view/stop-stock-outs-highlights-medicine-shortages-on-a-google-map/419/) in Kenya, Malawi, Madagascar, Uganda and Zambia.
